It's been a while since my last mix. I have been busy lately with work and stuff like the Vancouver Winter Olympics, vacation, etc.

Here's a mixed dance set featuring soulful and groovy house tracks. The mix highlights a house remake of Whitney Houston's For the Love Of You.

Next is my current favourite, a song by Heather Johnson (with Ananda Project) of Kiss, Kiss, Kiss fame. The track is reminiscent of emotive house tracks by the great David Morales.

Another re-done track is We Got The Love from Soul Agenda. You've heard this song before by Lindy Layton, from my House Faves set.

Next up is a remixed version of That's The Way Love Is; a track that’s over 20 years old!

Another great disco remix from DJ Meme comes in the form of Marc Evans' This Thing Called Love.

The Love I Lost is a 37 year old song reworked once again which is a testament of its greatness. It was originally done by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. It was then covered by Seventh Avenue and West End feat. Sybil.

Lastly, here's an updated version of You Know How To Love Me which was popularized by Phyllis Hyman.

House Faves 4

Here's another edition of my house favourites from the not so distant past. Featured in the mix is Joy Salinas, a Filipina singer who has made it big in Europe. The track right after Joy, is the late, great Dan Hartman who had big hits like I Can Dream About You, Relight My Fire, and Instant Replay. He died from a brain tumor in 1994. Also in the mix is Seal and Patti Labelle. Towards the tail end of the mix, one can hear the Joey Negro remix of Teardrops which sounds very much like Teri Desario's Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You with splashes of We Are Family from Sister Sledge.

Thanksgiving Mix (October '09)

Hey there, here's a new mix for all of you called the Thanksgiving Mix. It's Thanksgiving Day here in Canada; but more than that I have a lot to be thankful for since my family and friends were mostly spared the worst of what Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng had brought to the Philippines. In fact, it brought out the best in our race!

To celebrate the Filipino spirit my new mix features tracks from W.H. Bossa Nova Cinco

I guess it's the heat in Vancouver that inspired me to create this sizzling, summery, bossa nova set. The mix features a track from Basia's new CD entitled "It's That Girl Again". It's Basia's first solo studio recording after a 15 year hiatus. Basia is also heard in "Ronnie's Samba" when she reunited with Matt Bianco for the their 2004 CD; "Matt's Mood".

Other noteworthy tracks are bossa nova versions of popular Michael Jackson tracks. As well as Mike Francis' bossa nova version of his monster hit, "Friends".

Just give me a list of songs that you would like mixed together or you could also upload songs you would like to include and then I can mix them up in no time at all.

Amii Stewart's "Friends" is undoubtedly one of my most favourite songs of all time. Composed by Mike Francis, this classic slow jam will definitely stir up memories.

During the height of this song in the 80's, I remember making a 45 minute non-stop version of this track!

Contained in this file are various mixes and versions of the song, such as:

To those who follow this blog or my mixes might be wondering who my favourite artists are and who I most listen to on my 30gig ipod video.

1. Swing Out Sister

A lot of people think that this group had stopped making amazing tracks after having hits like Breakout, Forever Blue, and Am I The Same Girl. Actually, they never went away and have been releasing albums ever since the 80’s. They have remained big in Japan and most of their albums are released via Japanese labels which make it rare and expensive to follow the duo. However, access to the band is easier now with the digital age.

2. Maysa Leak
Often the lead singer for Incognito, Maysa Leak also has a solo career with tracks that can stand up on their own as well as Incognito’s. To me, she probably has the best voice in the world. I can never get enough of her songs.

3. Incognito
Incognito is Acid Jazz at its best. I never fail to acquire their latest release once it is available in the market. My dream is to see them perform live together with Maysa Leak as their lead vocalist.

4. D-Sound
I remember shopping at Music One in the nineties and I noticed a CD in bright neon yellow. I then sampled the tracks on the CD and I was blown away by the great melodies and soulful vocals of Simone. From then, I was hooked on the sound that is D’Sound.

An interesting note about the song Dancing Into The Moonlight from their DoubleHearted album. The song is actually about Boracay and was written on the island when the band visited Asia during one of their promo tours.

5. Monday Michiru
She doesn’t have the “pipes” like some of my favourites but she has a style and certain x-factor about her. Pair this with her bossa nova tracks or her soulful compositions and you get an artist like Monday Michiru.

6. Linda Lewis
Just like what her bio mentions on her website, it’s a mystery why an artist as talented as Linda Lewis is not a household name.

She had relative success in the 70s but just like some of my faves, Linda Lewis has remained popular in the Japanese scene only and has released remarkable CDs with quite a number of excellent tracks showcasing her soulful and jazzy style.

Noteworthy tracks are:

"One Heart" from Kaskade is bound to be a megahit. This track is taken from his new CD release, Strobelite Seduction.

A very hard to find remix single is GTS' remake of Chaka Khan's "Through The Fire". This one is remixed by Daishi Dance. After many misses and a lot of patience, I finally got the version!

Moony is back with another surefire hit. "I Don't Know Why" will be played over and over again in the clubs.

Despite having an unlucky number, Stereo Sushi 13 is chockful of "swingy" house stompers like "Say You're Gonna Stay", "Unbelievable", and "Love Crazy".

A New Day Mix

Hi folks, I'm back with a new mix! I've entitled it the New Day Mix because of several factors.

First, I have a new job so that's something to hype about. Second, we moved into a new place so that's been keeping me busy these past couple of months. And the third reason would be the mix itself since it's been awhile since I made one.

The style is still very much classy, melodic, and uplifting. You can also hear influences of swing, jazz, and latin in the tracks. Towards the end, it becomes a bit balearic in homage to Ibiza (and the like). Interesting to note that there might be 3 Filipinas in the tracklist.

One being Jenn Cuneta (ewan ko kung related siya kay Mega) with my favourite song at the moment. The second one is Juliana Aquino who does a remake of Never Knew Love Like This. The last is the DJ Dense Modesto remix of Sitti's Tatooed On My Mind (thanks to Bernie for the tip). Enjoy kids!

House Faves

My new mix is called House Faves. It features my favourite house choons from the recent past.

To start of the set is Dina Carroll's Special Kind of Love which is reminiscent of Cheryl Lynn's Got To Be Real or Mariah Carey's Emotion. The next two songs are Italo House tracks from Spagna and Ceybill Jeffries, both of which I believe were mixed by Black Box.

Then comes my remix of Septieme Ciel by Jane Fostin. I thought the clubs in Manila would discover this song and make it big but I guess i was the only who paid attention to it. The next, One True Love by Studio Apartment, is not exactly an old one but when I heard it a few weeks ago, it instantly became a classic in my book.

Then there's Kristine W's One More Try which I happily heard at Release bar managed by Verden Pilobilo (of Faces and Mars fame). Unfortunately, nobody frequented that bar in Malate. Next are two acid jazz classics remixed for the club scene; they are You Are the Universe by Brand New Heavies feat. Siedah Garrett and I Hear Your Name by Incognito feat. Maysa.

Then there's Higher & Higher by Engine which I discovered during one of my trips to San Francisco. Thanks to RT's Boo Kyler I found out about Lee Marrow's I Want Your Love. I would often play it during my spins at RT's Saturday Nite Live. Then there's some "swingy" tracks from Simply Red and George Michael.

Of course who can't forget Onne Saimera Plus Jamais by Larusso? This was such a big hit before at Venezia (V-Bar) and Stars. I think it was around this time, and maybe because of this song, when EJ was conceived (wow-wow-wee-waa ala Borat).

And then there's a catchy tune by Legacy of Sound which again only I seem to know about. FR feat. Jenny B comes next with another dose of Italo house; paired with Squareheads' massive Happy. The 2nd to the last song always urges me to sing-along. Legacy of Sound's Happy caps off the set.

Late 80s Mix

As you enter the threshold of the building, you could already feel the excitement in the air. The atmosphere morphs and you can see glimpses of the strobes peeking through the main entrance, whafts of cigarette smoke slide into your nostrils, and the muffled beat taunts your ears. The prospect of a night of fun plays around in your mind, but you know obstacles have to be hurdled first.

Reality sets in as you have to convince the attractive yet stern receptionist that you are on "the list" or that you have a "V.I.P." card or that at least you knew the friend of the owner. Otherwise, the menacing but mindless bouncer would be more than happy to throw you out.

As you await for the final judgment, the seconds seem to go slower, they seem to almost stop, you are almost prepared to be rejected.

The hottie receptionist looks at the waiting throng of people outside and you know she is somewhat pressured to speed things up but she has to make sure too that only the right people get in.

But tonight...you are lucky. She motions you and your entourage to go right in and suddenly a rush of adrenalin fills your veins. You and your friends head on down the dark corridor as if it were a dramatic veil prior to the grand reveal.

And there it is, like a jewel glimmering in the light, you see the dancefloor and all the lights spiking through the sweaty crowd. You feel the beat of the music pounding against your torso. You and your friends magically merges with the sea of people...now you are no longer just on your own or with your select friends...now you are part of a unified group of people only with one objective...and that is to have some slaamming fun, dancing & drinking the night away!

As my homage to such fave night haunts as Rumours, Zigzag, Kudos, Euphoria, and Faces...here's my Late 80s mix for everyone who experienced the same as I did during those days.

Into The Fall Mix

Here's a new mix for y'all. It's like my second mix which has influences of 70's swing/disco, R&B, bossa nova/samba, and commercial pop dance. Of course, they are all vocal house tracks mostly taken from Hed Kandi & Stereo Sushi compilations, except for a couple of tracks. I guess the common thread among all of them is that they are all pretty much very uplifting and classy---trademarks of my style.

As a footnote, this mix was ghost mixed by DJ John Tamad...who is this guest ghost DJ you might ask? It is actually also myself but the mix was 90% done by a DJ software which I had discovered. Would you believe that it could actually mix songs by itself? Isn't technology wonderful, eh?

Mix It Up

I am DJ JX and I am hobbyist DJ (disc jockey). I started spinning about 20 years ago. I was inspired in a way by my brother and his friends who used to have a mobile disco (almost everybody I think that time had a mobile). The name of his mobile was MasterMix.

Anyway, one day, I asked him to teach me how to mix. Basically he put one vinyl record on each turntable, with similar beats and BPM (beats per minute) and started to "mix it up". Eventhough his mix was off sync or the beats didn't match up, he taught me the essence of spinning. I picked up from that lesson, got more equipment, and eventually got better, at least better than my brother (hehe).

Soon, my hobby became a business and some sort of outlet. I had spun at my uncle's disco in the province. I became a guest for a friend's hip bar, Sambo. I was a regular at top radiot station's Saturday Night Live show dishing out club hits and fave house tracks. More importantly, I was hired by numerous clients to liven up their parties via my mobile disco.

Needless to say, my passion for music grew as did my skill since I was able to graduate from spinning vinyl records to CD's. However, when my family and I decided to migrate to Canada, I had to take the bitter pill that I would have to part from my DJ equipment and my beloved collection. Moreover, I would have to say goodbye from my passion. All I had in tow was a couple of loaded CD cases and my 30GB mp3 player.

Fast forward to life in Canada, I had almost forgotten about spinning and mixing until my nephew informed me about this software which could allow you to do a non-linear mix of tracks. With some dabbling and because of my experience in video editing, I was quick to pick up on the tool and was able to make myself several mixes. To be honest, I even felt that my latest creations were even better than what I did back home.

Anyway, I was so elated to re-discover my hobby and to be able to do it in today's technology. Imagine, I did not physically handle any records, any CD's, nor any mixer for me to complete my masterpieces.
